Happy St. Patrick's Day!
Today reminds me of the amazing trip to Ireland last year with Engaged Magazine. Ireland is such an amazing place for a wedding with all of its castles, gorgeous coastline and luxury hotels. Here we are at the historic Powerscourt estate (imagine a cocktail party on this lawn)!
And at the stunning Ritz-Carlton Powersourt!
And sampling the local brew!
Ah, to be back in Ireland! Happy St. Patrick's Day! Thanks to Jennifer Lust for the fab photos that bring back great memories!

Engaging Affairs at the Top of The Hay
I wanted to share the fun space we created for Engaging Affairs at the Engaged Show last Sunday at The Top of The Hay-Adams Hotel. Since our company colors are pale green, white and black (with a touch of pink when we're feeling preppy), we set up a fun area using modern lounge furniture from Capital Decor and flowering branches from Janet Flowers.
Ghost chairs were topped with green petaled pillows and lacy white compote bowls held mint green macaroons. A black basket was filled with green and white pashminas tied with pink rafia as our gift to brides.
Sara, Amanda and I wore white suits and red pumps (we just love red shoes)!
Thanks to everyone who stopped by to see us last weekend. We had an amazing time meeting brides (and their grooms, mothers and friends)! And thanks to our friend and amazing photographer Jennifer Lust for the fab photos!

Engaged at The Top of The Hay!
As promised, here are some photos by the fabulous Jennifer Lust of the Engaged Show at the Top of The Hay-Adams Hotel. We worked with Janet Flowers and DC Rental to put together three different tables that would all work beautifully in the space and with the colors of the rooftop. The first was our Pink Cameo table with cherry blossoms, French tulips and vintage candlesticks (and vintage cameos, of course). We used clear chairs and a lovely pink and gray linen with coordinating gray linens topped with pink cameos.
Kendall's Cakes provided a sweet pink cameo cake to be displayed next to the Pink Cameo table!
We then showed a more dramatic look with a square table draped in a hot pink linen, pink and purple flowers and lacy white plates. The hot pink rosette linen is to-die-for and is brand new at DC Rental!
The final look was a gardeny green linen to play off the garden trellis roof detail of the room. We used green and white plates with a deep purple accent and then brought the purple in with colored glassware and sleek purple orchids. Twig silverware and walnut-colored chivari chairs kept the look fresh and natural.
We hope you enjoy these fun tabletops!

Mandarin Oriental Wedding! {Alia & Daniel}
No photos yet but we do have a video highlight from Blue Sky of Alia and Daniel's wedding! The big day was on September 18, 2010 at the Mandarin Oriental and it was such a FANTASTIC wedding. Alia and Daniel made sure to customize every detail and ensured that their guests would remember their wedding forever. They choreographed their first dance to Michael Jackson's "The Way You Make Me Feel" which I think was one of the best parts of the evening. They also used our favorite Zafe band to lead their introduction into dinner and then later, the band played while belly dancers performed for the guests.
The vendor team was top notch and Capital Decor and Events created a votive chandelier that was suspended over the aisle for the ceremony. It led to a wall of orchids and made for a very Zen atmosphere. The decor for the cocktail hour and dinner where designed to lean towards the bride's Middle Eastern heritage and were much more colorful and ornate.
Dominic Sanchez at the Mandarin was delightful as always to work with and designed a menu that all the guests were talking about all night. I couldn't have asked for a better team to work with on this wedding!

Wedding Raincoats!
It's another rainy day here in the D.C. area and, as wedding season approaches, my mind naturally turns to the possibility of rainy wedding days. Although I carry almost a dozen huge umbrellas in my trunk for just such an occasion, the bride's gown always makes me nervous. One sneaky puddle or side-blowing rain and the bride ends up with water stains on her dress.
RainyDay BridalWear has made a raincoat for brides to wear just in case they have a rainy wedding day. This wedding dress raincoat is crystal clear so you can see the gown through it and has crystal snaps and satin cording. An over-sized hood fully protects the bride's hair, as well. The also completely wraps underneath, protecting the gown from wet grass and walkways on the way to ceremony and reception sites. I think this is so clever as the bottom of the gown always takes the biggest beating!
I think I may have to add one of these to my emergency kit. Although I'm not usually a fan of wearing clear plastic, I'd make an exception to get the bride to the church without soaking her dress. You can find this online at www.rainydaybridalwear.com .

Tax Tips for the Newlyweds
It's that time of year again. But for some of you newly married ladies, or men who have changed their name (I have had a few!) there is just one more thing you have to think about this year when filing your taxes. You need to make sure that the name on your tax return matches the name you have registered with the Social Security Administration. A mismatch between the two can cause problems in processing and even a delay in receiving that credit we all so desperately await.
Here are five tips from the IRS for recently married or divorced taxpayers who have a name change.
Here are five tips from the IRS for recently married or divorced taxpayers who have a name change.
- If you took your spouse’s last name or if both spouses hyphenate their last names, you may run into complications if you don’t notify the SSA. When newlyweds file a tax return using their new last names, IRS computers can’t match the new name with their Social Security Number.
- If you were recently divorced and changed back to your previous last name, you’ll also need to notify the SSA of this name change.
- Informing the SSA of a name change is easy; you’ll just need to file a Form SS-5, Application for a Social Security Card at your local SSA office and provide a recently issued document as proof of your legal name change.
- Form SS-5 is available on SSA’s website at http://www.socialsecurity.gov, by calling 800-772-1213 or at local offices. Your new card will have the same number as your previous card, but will show your new name.
- If you adopted your spouse’s children after getting married, you’ll want to make sure the children have an SSN. Taxpayers must provide an SSN for each dependent claimed on a tax return. For adopted children without SSNs, the parents can apply for an Adoption Taxpayer Identification Number – or ATIN – by filing Form W-7A, Application for Taxpayer Identification Number for Pending U.S. Adoptions with the IRS. The ATIN is a temporary number used in place of an SSN on the tax return. Form W-7A is available on the IRS website at http://www.irs.gov, or by calling 800-TAX-FORM (800-829-3676).

The Top of The Hay
We were lucky enough to take part in yesterday's fabulous Engaged in Washington Bridal Show at The Hay-Adams. Not only were we thrilled to be at The Hay-Adams, we were so excited to be on the new renovated rooftop ballroom called The Top of the Hay. This space is so gorgeous and is the new hot spot for DC brides.
As you can see from the photos and renderings, the ballroom is lined on almost all sides with floor-to-ceiling glass letting in tons of light and giving an amazing view over The White House and Washington Monument. Plus, the ceilings have enormous skylights, which give a wonderful sense of airiness. The Top of the Hay can hold weddings or rehearsal dinners (or any other party) for up to 200 guests with dancing. And, as you can see below, you can't beat the view!
We'll share photos of the Engaged event very soon so you see the pretty pink cameo table we did in the space with tons of cherry blossoms and French tulips. Have a happy Monday everyone!

Death on the Aisle {Chapter Eleven}
Chapter Eleven
“Just take deep breaths.” Leatrice knelt over me and fanned my face, making a nice breeze but not doing anything to help the fish smell that dominated the air.
I swatted her away. “I’m fine. I just got a little lightheaded, that’s all.”
Reese pulled me up with one hand so that I ended up almost chest-to-chest with him. “Are you sure you’re okay?”
I looked up and his hazel green eyes were staring down at me with concern but what I couldn’t stop staring at were his lips, which were so close to mine I only needed to go on tip-toes to touch them. I felt my face flush and realized I was still holding his hand so I dropped it and stepped back. “Absolutely.”
“Like I was about to say when you collapsed, Richard is fine,” Leatrice said.
“Then who’s dead?” I asked, wiping dirt off the seat of my jeans.
Reese cleared his throat. “It looks like the chef electrocuted himself somehow but Richard was in the kitchen when it happened so he’s still being questioned.”
“But he couldn’t have had anything to do with it,” I said.
“Probably not,” Reese agreed. “But it’s standard procedure.”
I could only imagine how Richard was handling being interviewed by the police. Ever since an unfortunate accident that almost shut down his business a couple of years back, Richard had been overly sensitive about law enforcement.
“There’s nothing you can do here,” Reese said. “Why don’t you head on home, and I’ll give you a call when we release your friend?”
I didn’t think that was such a bad idea and started scanning the crowd for Kate. I found her quickly enough by looking for the crowd of uniformed men. I waved to get her attention but she was staring through her crowd of admirers to some commotion at the gate to the dock.
“You don’t understand,” the agitated male voice was saying to a pair of uniformed officers guarding the entrance to the dock. “My family is on there.”
I recognized Brody even though he was wearing a baseball cap, ripped shorts and a faded T-shirt and looked much les debonair than the day before when we’d met him.
Reese sighed. “I’d better go help the guys with security. All sorts of people have been trying to get a closer look.”
“He’s telling the truth,” I said. “That’s Brody, the bride’s brother. Well, stepbrother.”
“Is he single?” Leatrice asked, looking him up and down.
“Nope. He’s got a fiancé,” I said, and then added. “I only know because Kate was interested.”
Reese gave me a lopsided grin then started off toward the dock. I followed behind, pulling Leatrice along with me so she couldn’t run off and get in any trouble.
When Brody saw me behind Reese he snapped his fingers and pointed. “That’s the wedding planner. She can tell you who I am.”
“She already did.” Reese gave his best stern cop look. “That doesn’t mean we can let you on board. The boat is a secure crime scene.”
Brody’s face drained of color, and I wondered if his tan was real or fake. “What do you mean ‘crime scene?’ What happened?”
“There’s been a death on board,” Reese said.
“The chef,” I said quickly so Brody wouldn’t think it was any of his family members.
Reese shot me a look over his shoulder but I ignored him.
“The chef was electrocuted, and we have to determine if it was an accident or murder.”
“Bernard is dead?” Brody rubbed a hand across his forehead. “He’s been with us for years.”
Kate came up next to me. “What’s going on?”
“Brady just found out that Bernard is dead,” Leatrice said in a stage whisper.
“Brody,” I corrected.
Leatrice cocked her head. “His name is Brody? I thought the chef was Bernard.”
“Who’s Bernard?” Kate asked then her eyes got big. “Wait, did you say someone’s dead?”
“The brother is Brody, the chef is Bernard.” I raised an eyebrow at Kate. “What have you been doing over there for all this time with half of the police squad? Talking about the weather?”
Kate shrugged and crossed her arms. “The crime scene didn’t come up.”
“But you have to let me on,” Brody continued to argue. “That’s where I live.”
“And as soon as we’ve processed the scene, we’ll be happy to let you on,” Reese said, taking Brody by the arm and steering him away from the dock. “But for now, you’ll have to wait.”
“But I really need to . . .”
I looked at Brody’s anguished face. “Maybe we should help . . .”
Before I could finish my thought, Leatrice and Kate were pushing past each other to get to him. Leatrice beat Kate, and I credited the fact that she was lower to the ground and not wearing heels.
Leatrice looped her arm through his. “It looks like you need a friend, young man.”
Brody took one look at Leatrice’s sailor suit and his face went from pained to confused. “Do you work on the docks?”
Leatrice slapped his arm and laughed. “Aren’t you funny?”
Kate grabbed Brody’s other arm and batted her eyelashes at him. “Run along, Leatrice. Don’t you have some knots to tie or spinach to eat?”
Leatrice glared at Kate while Reese choked back a laugh. “Come to think of it, she does look like a smaller version of Popeye,” he said, leaning close to me.
“Don’t let Leatrice hear you,” I said. “You don’t want to be on her bad side. It’s hard enough to be on her good side.”
Reese laughed. “I’ve missed that.”
“Leatrice?” I asked. I’d always gotten the idea that Reese only tolerated her.
“No, definitely not Leatrice.” He laughed again then looked more serious. “You. So how have you been, Annabelle? It’s been a long time.”
Leatrice and Kate’s squabbling faded into the background as I met Reese’s eyes. I was just about to get up the nerve to tell him that I’d missed him, too, when I heard high-pitched screams coming from the boat.
“Let me off this instant or heads will roll!”
I’d know that hysterical voice anywhere. Richard.
