Hope you're celebrating (or not celebrating) in style today! I have to say that my preschooler and 1st grader are more excited for Valentine's Day than just about any adult I know. The care with which they selected their valentine cards and attached the Spider-Man pencils, fairy stickers and Blow-Pops rivals the thought that most grown men (and women) put into the holiday. I mean, these kids are so excited to pass out their goodies (and get their own bags stuffed with little superhero and princess cards and candy) that they could burst. So I say we take a cue from kids and just enjoy today for all it's goofiness. I, for one, hope I get a Spider-Man valentine!

And congratulations to all those about-to-be-newly-engaged ladies out there!

A Spectacular Indian Wedding at the Ritz DC {Rachna and Samir}

To say that I loved working with Rachna and her family would be an understatement. From the moment I met the bride, she impressed me with her energy and sense of fun. She loved planning her wedding and had such a great sense of what she liked and how she wanted her celebration. And her groom couldn't have been sweeter!

The wedding week started with the Mehndi party on Thursday and welcome dinners at two locations on Friday (but those stories and images are for a later post). After these fun parties, everyone was so excited for the main events on Saturday!

Saturday was sunny but chilly. The bride got ready in her suite while the groom and his family and friends gathered in front of the Ritz DC for the Baraat. Harmon's Carriages provided the gentle horse that Samir rode while everyone danced and clapped to the sounds of the dhol player. This is my favorite part of the Indian wedding celebration; I love the energy and joy!

Once Samir arrived and entered the hotel, he was greeted by the bride's family and friends at the fabric and floral gate we had at the base of the Ritz staircase and then everyone entered the ballroom for the ceremony. DaVinci's had been hard at work setting up the mandap since 4 am and it was stunning! It featured sheer gold fabric adorned with tassles with masses of flowers at the corners and center plus a crystal chandelier hanging from the center (which was a surprise for the bride from Diana from DaVinci's)! The aisle had half circles of rose petals in the bride's colors surrounding tall glass cylinders topped with floating candles down the sides.

The traditional Hindu ceremony was so beautiful. I love that the ceremonies involve both families.

After the ceremony, the bridesmaids managed to steal the groom's shoes back from the groomsmen, which is a fun Indian wedding tradition.

After the lunch, the bride and groom took photos during the break then started getting ready for the evening reception.

The Ritz-Carlton catering staff, lighting crew from Event EQ, and design team from DaVinci's did an amazing job flipping the ballroom to get ready for the reception. Gold linens covered the round, square and long rectangular tables and were topped with three different centerpiece designs using the bride's colors of deep red, purple, and spice orange along with masses of roses, hydrangea and orchids. Oversized red lampshades on some of the tables were strung with crystals and the tall floral arrangements had strands of rose petals and crystals hanging below. The tables were set with gold beaded and gold shimmer base plates and gold-rimmed stemware and had high and low candles throughout to create a magical sparkle. Menu cards and table numbers were designed with the couple's logo by Zoya Couture and coordinated with the custom invitation suite and all the paper products for the wedding.

After a festive cocktail hour, guests entered the ballroom and were entertained by the couple's same-day edit video created by Suburban Video (see that video here) before the bride and groom entered the room.

After the couple's first dance and a series of heartfelt toasts, the guests enjoyed a multi-course dinner by Indique Heights (I can attest that the palaak paneer was delicious) and then Jag and his team from Event EQ kept the dance floor packed for the rest of the evening.

The bride's sister and cousins entertained the crowd with a Bollywood-style dance that was a huge hit and a guest sang a song to the bride and groom!

When guests weren't dancing, they enjoyed the scotch bar and modern lounge in the foyer with the same-day video looping on a flat screen above the bar.

The couple cut what had to have been the largest wedding cake I've ever seen (13 tiers over six feet tall and over 400 pounds--it had to be rolled out of the pastry kitchen on a flat bed and lifted by five chefs!) that was covered in jewel-encrusted paisley in the bride's colors. Amazing!

Aside from being a stunning wedding, this was also one of the happiest couples I've seen in a while. Best wishes to Rachna and Samir for a lifetime of happiness!

Special thanks to everyone at the Ritz-Carlton DC who made the day a fabulous success: Stacy, Amal, our captains and waiters, the pastry chef Daniel, the entire culinary team that worked hand-in-hand with Indique Heights to make sure the food was great. A huge thank you to Diana and her team from DaVinci's for going above and beyond to create such gorgeous decor. Thanks to the amazing Jag and his team from Event EQ for creating the perfect ambiance with lighting and sound. A shout-out to Arti from Zoya Couture for the beautiful logo design, the seating boards and paper products that tied everything together.

Huge kudos to my team: Sara, Amanda, Alison and Sarah. I couldn't have done it without you all! And I can't forget Bill and Tom and the team from Suburban Video who worked tirelessly to create the same-day video. And, perhaps most importantly, a huge thank you to Amy and Srinu Regeti from Regeti's for the absolutely gorgeous images. You really captured the energy and joy of the day and were an absolute delight to work with! To all the fabulous people on Team Rachna and Samir: you are amazing; there are no people I'd rather spend three days plus twenty straight hours working with!

Not totally sure if this falls under fabulous or freaky but it's pretty impressive. Made out of over 2,000 peacock feathers, this custom gown took over two months and eight craftsmen to create and is encrusted with jewels and worth over a million dollars! Wow!

Now I'm not usually the first to jump on a new technology or social media bandwagon. Or the second or third. People usually have to point it out and tell me that I need to be tweeting my breakfast choice or must become the mayor of someplace. But I'm quite enjoying playing on Pinterest. I've been pinning some images from favorite Engaging Affairs weddings and even favorite wedding shoes. I have some of my novel-writing inspiration up and some of my favorite books of all time.

Even better, I've found some great inspiration on everything from making superhero capes to cleaning cast iron. I love little tidbits like this! So check out my boards on Pinterest. How do I love Lilypad? Let me count the ways! Lilypad Weddings is a boutique graphic design studio that serves Washington, DC and Austin, TX (and everywhere in between)! I have used them for invites, programs, menu cards, escort cards- you name it! The best part is that they will work with you to custom design your product so that is completely unique and personalized! I wanted to highlight three designs that I just adored over the last year!

Their Chevy Chase suite was designed for one of my weddings back in September. They also created programs, table numbers, and escort cards in the same design. How cute are these?!

We had a special project for one of my weddings that took place The Newseum (blog to come)! Jen Liljegren, the fabulous graphic designer at Lilypad, listened to my vision and executed it perfectly! She made escort cards out of filmstrip to complement the existing décor of the Newseum and also a nod to the sports documentary the groom is producing! Loved these so much! Compliments to Amaryllis Design for the awesome vintage movie décor for the escort card table and Greg Gibson for the fabulous photos!

And finally, another suite that is near and dear to my heart- my own wedding invitations! Jen was kind enough to create some very unique and beautiful designs for our upcoming small intimate affair in Turks and Caicos! Her designs are still classic and reverent to the occasion but incorporate so many hints of fun that guests are sure to never forget your invitation!

Castle Hill {Charlottesville Venues}

The Engaging Affairs girls had the pleasure of visiting Castle Hill Cider, a Virginia cidery and event venue. Let me tell you, this place is stunning! There are so many possibilities for rehearsal dinner, ceremonies, and receptions on this property.

Castle Hill is located in Keswick’s horse country, just a few miles away from Charlottesville. The Blue Ridge Mountains serve as a perfect backdrop for wedding photos anytime of the year!

The Barn has a finished feel but is still rustic which lends itself to countless décor possibilities! It has an awesome loft that can seat an additional 200-300 guests. There is also a separate library, which can serve as a bridal room, complete with a fireplace, lounge furniture, and a balcony. The tasting room can also act as a private hideaway for the bride and groom!

Outside, the Linden Grove is so beautiful for either a ceremony or a reception. There are also The Orchard, The Lawns, and The Lake for an outside option, tented or not!

The venue is also a cidery so their tasting room is open to the public during the day. Evelyn Keyes, their events coordinator, was so gracious to let us try some of the ciders that they make on site. So delicious and refreshing! We couldn’t help but think how fabulous that would be for a toast, specialty cocktail, or a favor for a wedding!

And I love breakfast for wedding receptions. We've done brunch weddings or even midnight breakfast spreads. Our own Sara served fabulous breakfast foods during the cocktail hour of her evening wedding and it was a massive hit.

You can get really creative with traditional breakfast food and make them passable for a more elegant presentation like mini pancakes, tiny frittatas and layered yogurt parfaits. This stylish omelette bar from 100 Layer Cake is divine!

A North Meets South Romance {Brandi + Justin}

The bride, a sweet Southern Belle. The groom, from the North and die-hard Mets fan. Somewhere in the middle they met and fell in love.

The elegant affair began on a warm Saturday morning in October. The Groom started off his wedding day with a game of whiffle ball with his friends on the Mall. While he was enjoying the day outside, the Bride and her lovely ladies were busy getting ready at the beautiful Willard hotel. Thank you to Diane of Hair by Diane and Pattie Martin for amazing hair and makeup!

The out of town guests along with the bridal party were transported to the Mellon Auditorium by shuttles and limos provided by International Limo. The Bride and her brother rode over in a vintage car provided by Regal Limo.

As guests arrived at the Mellon Auditorium for the Fall-inspired wedding, they were greeted by passed apple cider. The very talented Pop Culture Strings played modern and traditional songs as guests found their seats. After the bridal party made their way down the aisle, the Bride entered with her brother to "God Only Knows" played by the strings. So sweet!

Cocktail hour consisted of delicious specialty cocktails called “Snaps” made from Ginger liquor, a raw bar set up on the upstairs terrace and, for their newspaper-themed guestbook (the couple works for a newspaper company), an antique typewriter sat next to where the guests signed blank sheets of paper, balled them up and threw them in a small trash can! After the wedding, the couple planned to flatten them all out and place them in a scrapbook to remember the memories. So creative!

Once cocktails were over, guests were ushered back inside the main hall for dinner and dancing. The room was stunning with amber lighting and rich purple, orange, red and blue flowers and linens. Thank you to Capitol Décor for all of the amazing flowers and John Farr Lighting for the perfect ambiance!

The delicious dinner and wedding cake was provided by Occasions Caterers. In addition to the wedding cake, the Bride surprised the Groom with a Mets themed groom’s cake designed by the famous Charm City Cakes.

Dancing started off downstairs in the main room thanks to Sound Connection and continued at the after party on the 3^rd floor terrace until the wee hours of the morning.

The 3^rd floor terrace, decorated in white furniture with a custom white bar and lit with pink and blue uplights was packed with the guests dancing until the party shut down. Guests were also able to enjoy late night snacks including a S'mores station.

All of the amazing images were captured by photographer, Steve Canning. Thank you also to Blue Sky Films for capturing all of the day’s memories on video.

Henna Cakes {Creme-Delicious}!

I am in love with these fabulous mini cakes for bridal showers or as favors for Indian weddings. I saw them in O Magazine and immediately started to swoon. How gorgeous are they?

Sandy Patangay, an award-winning New York-based henna artist, founded Crème-Delicious last year after realizing she could create edible versions of her henna designs. Her yummy flavors include chocolate, vanilla, red velvet, and green tea, and the cakes are baked at a downtown Manhattan cake studio. Each fondant-covered, heart-shaped cake is hand-decorated with piped frosting, sugar beads, and edible glitter dust. The cakes are presented in individual acrylic boxes tied with satin ribbon. Perfect for favors at the end of the evening!

Each fabulous cake costs $20 plus tax, with a minimum order of four. Discounts are available for orders of more than 100. Orders placed within New York are hand-delivered; orders for clients outside of the city are shipped via UPS next-day air.

An Irish Mexican Romance {Linda + James}

What a gorgeous and personalized wedding! It's always fun blending cultures and heritages into the wedding day and especially when the backgrounds (Irish and Mexican) are so fun. Working with Linda was a wonderful experience. She was a bride who knew what she wanted. The only thing in question for her wedding day was if the rain was going to hold out.

Linda chose to hold her wedding reception on the grounds of her father’s residence. Thanks to Select Event Rentals, we had a beautifully draped tent for the dinner reception just in case the rain decided to rear it’s ugly head.

Fortunately for Linda and James, they awoke to a very warm and sunny Saturday in September. The bride and her friends had a relaxing morning getting their makeup done by Jordin Winn and their hair styled by Jim Berdine. Photographer Mark Betlinger of Rodney Bailey Photography was able to capture some amazing getting ready shots of the bride.

While the bride and her girls were getting ready upstairs, the groom and his guys were taking pictures around the house downstairs.

After the photos were taken, shuttles provided by Atlantic Transportation arrived to bring the bridal party and families to Our Lady of Mercy for the ceremony. Fabulous videographer Julie Gross of Blue Sky Films captured the arrival of the bridal party and guests at the church.

Father Monsignor Filardi led the ceremony that incorporated some Mexican traditions in honor of the bride and her family such as the bride and groom wrapped in the rosary lasso.

After the ceremony, guests arrived at the residence greeted by valet provided by Unipark. They enjoyed delicious cocktails and appetizers provided by Spilled Milk Catering while listening to the sounds of a mariachi band. The bride and groom served "The Irish Mexican" as their signature cocktail (includes Kahlua, Tequila and Whiskey)!

Guests then entered the reception tent where the all white wedding reception was reflected in the tent draping, linens (provided by Party Rental), stunning floral decor (provided by Edge Flowers) and candlelight. The fountain that normally sits in the center of the driveway, became the focal point of the tent, surrounded by tall candles and twinkle lights. The whole effect was magical!

To help get the party started, the bride and groom had a shooter called the Irish Margarita placed at each placed setting (includes Tequila, Crème de Menthe and Triple Sec). The green of the drink looked amazing on the tables!

Spilled Milk Catering was able to succeed in the challenge of incorporating the bride’s Mexican heritage and the groom’s Irish background in each and every food item that was served throughout the evening. Some of the items included Corn Beef Quesadillas, Spiced Lamb Shephard's Pie with Cilantro and Guinness Battered Shrimp with Mango Lime Salsa. Delicious! After dinner, guests snacked on a candy/dessert buffet. The bride’s mother not only designed the look of the display but also baked some of the items!

The amazing "Broad Sound" kept the guests on the dance floor all night long.

Thank you to Blue Ribbon Restrooms for the chic portable restroom trailer and to all the vendors that made the wedding spectacular. Beautiful job! Thanks to Mark and Rodney for letting us share the gorgeous images of the day. Thank you also to my amazing assistants, Sarah and Emily.

Introducing the Four Seasons Baltimore!

Last weekend, I had the good fortune to attend an overnight preview experience of the new Four Seasons Baltimore. Sponsored by Doreen Tisone of Engaged Magazine and The Four Seasons, this trip was a real treat!

After checking-in, I was escorted to my suite which had wrap-around floor-to-ceiling views of the water and city. Stunning! The rooms are gorgeous with sleek furnishings and decadent bathrooms but it's the view you can't take your eyes off of.

After enjoying the tea and munchies in our rooms, everyone gathered downstairs at the spa for a welcome reception followed by spa treatments.

Some of you may know that I'm a bit of a spa junkie. I love spas and have been to lots of them all over the world. Could stay in them until my fingers get pruny and I turn into a limp noodle. So I can say with confidence that this spa is amazing! They have a heat experience that features a vitality plunge pool, an aromatic steam room, a Finnish sauna, experience showers (my favorite setting was the neck-pounding cascade) and heated stone lounge chairs. Heaven!

Not to mention, the therapists were all amazing. Everyone came out looking punch-drunk and totally relaxed. My facial was fabulous and included a neck and shoulder massage that drained away all my tension. After our spa time, we gathered at the hotel restaurant, Wit and Wisdom, for dinner.

Dinner was such a culinary treat, with visits by the executive and pastry chefs to talk about the food. The restaurant is very into sourcing locally and also pays tribute to it's Baltimore home with upscale takes on local favorites. The "Baltimore Bar" (a chocolate sensation covered with nuts and candies) was to-die-for!

The next morning we gathered for breakfast on the ballroom level. One huge attribute of the Four Seasons Baltimore is that its ballrooms aren't in the basement. The junior ballroom is completely lined with glass walls as are many of the smaller rooms.

Breakfast was another treat for our taste buds with the most heavenly warm donuts, fresh fruit with mint and delicious egg white frittatas.

After breakfast, we toured the ballrooms and admired the gorgeous art throughout the hotel. The hotel has space for 350+ in their grand ballroom but my favorite space was the junior ballroom with it's beautiful views for 150-175 guests. All the spaces are so sleek and elegant.

Finally, we toured the infinity pool area and deck with the hot tub and chic wading pool. Although it isn't open yet (too cold!), this will be such a hot spot come summer! I also love the outdoor fireplace. What a lovely backdrop for an intimate wedding!

7) What has been your favorite vendor meal? I'm going to have to go with Amanda on the 6-course tasting menu from Fed City--amazing to actually get to eat every course while working a wedding! Also, the lobster mac-n-cheese from Occasions.

8) What is your favorite guilty pleasure TV show? The Big Bang Theory. Used to watch Jersey Shore but I felt my IQ slipping after Season 2!

9) What wedding song would you be happy to never hear again as long as you live? Everyone who works with me knows my aversion to "Mustang Sally"

10) Strangest thing you've carried in your emergency kit and how did you use it. Oddest emergency kit "save." Super-glue. I had to glue the buttons on a bride's dress as they were popping off right before she walked down the aisle. And Preparation-H for making puffy under-eye circles disappear after a bride cried too much!

11) Wedding trend you would love to see die a quick death. Inappropriate use of Mason jars or any "rustic" touch that has been done to death.

12) What is one thing no one in the wedding business knows about you and would be surprised to learn? I was once accused of being a spy by a country and denied entrance. I wasn't a spy, of course, but it's a long, cool story.

13) What is the strangest thing a client has ever asked you to do? Return underwear for them. Seriously, people?

14) Favorite and least favorite celebrity weddings. Loved Ellen Degeneres and Portia DeRossi's wedding because it was small and intimate and just about them. Despised Kim Kardashian's latest wedding because it was the exact opposite. And 72 days? Come on!

What has been your favorite vendor meal? Tie between the delicious cheese pizza at the Gaylord or six course sampler from Federal City. Both hit the spot on different levels!!

What is your favorite guilty pleasure TV show? Hoarders and Lock Up. 100%. I also love a lot of the HGTV shows though!

What wedding song would you be happy to never hear again as long as you live? Cupid's Shuffle for sure!

Strangest thing you've carried in your emergency kit and how did you use it. Oddest emergency kit "save." Hmmm... I use all the "regulars" often but I guess when I used the zots (think scrapbooking tape dots) to secure a bride's bouquet and sash that we were wrapping around the base last minute was slightly strange!

Wedding trend you would love to see die a quick death. Guestbook. Odd I know but I never feel that guests pay it enough attention unless its something really creative.

What is one thing no one in the wedding business knows about you and would be surprised to learn? I love puppies and walk a few each day since my apartment doesn't allow me to own one!

Favorite and least favorite celebrity weddings. Favorite- I actually loved Hilary Duff's, Amy Smart's, and Kate Moss's. I thought they all really reflected their personal style. Least favorite- any wedding that is just self promoting. It takes away from the meaning of the event that so many wonderful people treasure for their whole lives!

Wedding trend you would love to see die a quick death. The "home made look" It is never home made, costs a lot of money and I'm concerned my brides would regret it in 10 years.

What is the strangest thing a client has ever asked you to do? Stand by her at all times during the day. It's really hard to do the rest of my job and plus, do you really want me following you around?

Have leftover ceremony programs or invitations? How about making them into a Christmas ornament? Check out these fun ideas for preserving your wedding memories!

Now I'm not the most crafty person, despite being a wedding planner. Perhaps because I've had to do so many wedding projects for so many brides, I just don't relish doing them in my off hours. But these projects look pretty simple. Shred some programs, decoupage them to an ornament, cover in glittery substance, let dry. OR cut programs into strips, jam said strips into clear ornament, replace top. Voila! Happy {crafting} Holidays!

Smells of the Season

Happy Holidays! So, Hanukkah began last night and I may be just one day late for some of you who had decided not to make the traditional potato latkes for fear of the everlasting smell they leave in your home. I'm here to tell you it's not too late! (To make them or get rid of that fried oder)

I feel like I have shared this secret with so many friends, clients and vendors over the past week, you should all know it. While making up those latkes or after, fill a small pot with water and place it on the stove under medium low heat. Add 2 cinnamon sticks and a quarter cup of cloves and let it simmer. As the water evaporates, fee free to keep adding water to keep the sweet smell in the air. Sometimes I throw this on even when I'm not cooking just to make the house smell nice- without artificial sprays :)

Since winter is time for citrus fruits, you can also throw in an orange, lemon or grapefruit to add a light aroma. Thanks to my mom for this secret remedy that hopefully will benefit many this holiday season.

When the weather gets cold, I love hot chocolate! And I love doing hot chocolate stations at weddings. A couple of weeks ago, we had hot chocolate to-go at a wedding and guests loved fixing a cup before getting in their cars and heading out into the cold.

Holiday Cookies!

The holidays are all about love and giving and eating cookies, right? I do love cookies and holiday cookies are the best. December brings out cookies that we don't see for the rest of the year (don't ask me why). So in the spirit of giving and cookie eating, here is one of my favorite holiday cookies recipes (courtesy of Karin Christian from allrecipes.com).

Molassas Ginger Sugar Cookies

Ingredients

1 1/2 cups shortening
2 cups white sugar
1/2 cup molasses
2 eggs
4 cups all-purpose flour
4 teaspoons baking soda
2 teaspoons ground cinnamon
1 teaspoon ground cloves
1 teaspoon ground ginger
1 teaspoon salt

Directions

Melt the shortening in a large pan on the stove, and cool.
Add sugar, eggs, and molasses, beat well.
In a separate bowl, sift dry ingredients together and add to the pan. Mix well and chill 3 hours or overnight.
Form into walnut-size balls. Roll in granulated sugar. Place on greased cookie sheet about 2 inches apart.
Bake at 375 degrees F (190 degrees C) for 8-10 minutes.
Store in an airtight container to keep from getting overly crisp. If they do lose their softness, an easy way to restore it is to place one slice of fresh bread in the container with the cookies for a couple of hours or overnight and they will be soft again!

240 Sweet {Magnificent Marshmallows}

Every year, we find some really unique items for our brides and one of our favorites this year is hand-crafted organic marshmallows from 240sweet. This fun company creates gourmet marshmallows in tons of amazing flavors from salted caramel to vanilla lavender to chocolate chip to roasted pineapple!

Partners Alexa Lemley and Samantha Aulick hand-craft the artisan treats in Columbus, Indiana. Originally, they made marshmallows to give to their catering customers. Soon, people begin clamoring for more puffs and 240sweet was born.

They are perfect for hotel welcome bags along with a bag of hot cocoa mix and no one will have seen anything like them before! Trust me when I say they are seriously yummy! Check out all the amazing flavors at 240sweet.

Fleur de Sel S'mores
Are you ready for the best s'more you will ever enjoy? We use Maldon sea salt and Chef Alexa's own caramel in the Salty Caramel Twist puff. The addition of dark chocolate and crunchy graham crackers makes an irresistable delight.

6 puffs Salty Caramel Twist 240sweet Artisan Marshmallows
6 miniature dark chocolate candy bars
12 graham cracker cookies

On a platter, place cookies upside down. Individually, place miniature candy bars on six
of the cookies. Reserve remaining cookies to top s'mores.

Using a skewer, roast puffs to toasting preferences. Place one roasted puff atop each candy bar and cookie stack. Place remaining cookies
atop stacks and squish. Indulge immediately.

Note: To make these s'mores in broiler, place half of cookes topped with candy bar and marshmallow under a hot broiler until puff is the desired shade of brown. Upon removal, immediately top stacks with remaining cookies.

This past weekend I learned about an amazing website: www.borrowitbindaas.com. One of the bridesmaids at my wedding had rented her saree from the site and it was beautiful! The site works pretty much like renttherunway.com where you rent a fabulous outfit for a fraction of the purchase price and then return it. This is perfect if you don't go to Indian weddings often but want to wear a saree or if you just don't want to invest a lot in an outfit you may not wear again or if you don't want to wear an old saree.

Some of these sarees are so pretty that I'm dying to try them on even though when I attend an Indian wedding, I'm usually working at it (and a fancy saree doesn't seem appropriate wedding planner attire). Elephants and Horses and Drummers, Oh My! {Baraats}

As we get ready to go into a big Indian wedding weekend, I thought we'd share some of our favorite images of the Baraat. The Baraat is the processional of the groom and his family and friends to greet the bride's family before the ceremony. It can be done on an elephant, a horse, a car or on foot. Music and dancing are always a big part and I love having dhol drummers lead everyone.

As far as logistics go, elephants are the trickiest (for obvious reasons) but even with a horse, you need to get permits from the city and have a police escort on hand.

The Baraat is one of my favorite parts of an Indian wedding because it leads off the whole celebration with such energy! This weekend we have a horse from Harmon's Carriages (our go-to source for Baraat horses) plus dhol drummers from Event EQ to lead the crowd and we can't wait for the fun!

I found these yummy holiday-inspired cocktails in Special Events Magazine and had to share. Just reading them makes me want to tip one back and it's not even noon! Are they drinks? Are they dessert Who cares!!

Pumpkin Pie Cocktail

1 tsp pumpkin pie filling
2 oz chardonnay
1 oz Hennessy cognac
2 oz apple cider
1 oz pumpkin pie spice syrup

Put all ingredients in a shaker with ice, shake and serve in a pretty glass.

Savory Apple Pie Cocktail

1 oz VeeV Acai Juice
1 oz Calvados
1 oz cinnamon bark simple syrup
Juice of 2 lime wedges
Splash of apple cider

Put all ingredients in a shaker with ice, shake and serve.

A Whimsical Woodend Wedding {Ginny & Chris}

Although September proved to be a challenge for us weather wise, Ginny and Chris got blessed with a beautiful day for a ceremony and reception at Woodend Sanctuary! The beautiful, classic venue was perfect for the vision they wanted to create!

When I first met Ginny (and later on Chris), I fell in love with them as a couple! They are quirky, real, and obviously so in love! A wedding planner’s dream come true! Ginny and I found our common ground- both James Madison University alums! I loved all the wonderful touches that she wanted to add to make her event unique and perfectly reflective of the couple’s relationship!

We got Ginny and Chris ready at the Bethesda Doubletree which is so convenient to the venue!

One of my favorite touches were the programs, which were created by Lilypad Weddings (as well as the invitations, programs, escort cards, and table numbers)! They listed each of their wedding party along with their superhero power- a nod to Chris’s love for comics! It was great to read all the descriptions and hear the giggles in the crowd as guests read through the program!

Woodend is a beautiful backdrop for wedding photos! Chris and Ginny took a ton of pictures in the grove with the talented Emily Johnston Anderson Photography who came all the way from New York to capture these moments!

Cocktail hour was held outside with cornhole games to keep the crowd moving! I love this shot of one of the ring bearers taking a break from the party! Windows Catering served delicious nibbles and yummy cocktails outside on the portico!

We moved under the tent for dinner and were treated to red wine braised boneless short ribs or harvest chicken! Yum! Christopher from Amaryllis created beautiful arrangements for the different tables. Ginny and Chris both work in the publishing industry in New York and had been collecting a variety of 1st editions from vintage bookstores which were arranged with small turquoise vases filled with seasonal flowers. The other tables were birdcages overflowing with flowers coupled with some mason jars holding smaller arrangements.

Mike from MyDeejay kept the dance floor going after dinner and toasts (which were some of the best I have ever heard)!

Not to mention, a spirited cake cutting!

All in all- a beautiful night for a stunning couple!

Death on the Aisle {Chapter Seventeen}

Chapter Seventeen

We could hear the shrieks before we reached the end of the dock, and I swallowed hard and shifted from a walk into a run. I tried not to feel irritated that I’d had to leave Ian to run back to the boat, and I told myself that I was lucky to have such a patient boyfriend, although I still wasn’t sure if I could call him that.

Ian had been understanding when Kate and I had run off after getting the text from Fern telling us there was more trouble on the boat and he’d promised to come over later and pick up where we left off. My heart beat a little faster when I thought of Ian coming over but I reminded myself that I was running pretty hard. Another voice joined the shrieking.

“That doesn’t sound good,” Kate said, running behind me to keep up.

Even though both voices was high-pitched and verging on hysterical, it didn’t narrow down the list of possible shriekers. I ran though options in my head: Richard, Fern, the bride, Jeremy Johns, Mrs. Barbery, the unnamed space healer I still imagined wearing dramatic robes. I just hoped it wasn’t Richard or Fern.

We reached the enormous boat, technically a ship, and I ran up the nearest gangplank, not stopping to take off my shoes until I reached the top and remembered the hard-and-fast rule about not wearing shoes on board.

I smacked my forehead. “Shoes,” I said, hopping on one foot to take them off as Kate nearly ran into me from behind. She muttered something but took hers off, as well, and we carried them with us as we followed the sounds of chaos.

It sounded like the voices were coming from one of the top decks so we ran up a narrow flight of steps on the back of the boat. As we rounded the corner to the rear outdoor lounge, I stopped short.

Two women stood nose-to-nose screaming, and I didn’t recognize either of them. One wore a white T-shirt and black cargo pants and had her pale hair pulled back in a messy ponytail while the other had lots of dark, wavy hair that spilled loose down her back and across the straps of her white tank dress.

Kate looked around her. “Who are these people? Are we on the right boat?”

Before either of us could check the side of the boat for the name, Fern appeared around the corner. He looked impeccable in a slim, dark suit and powder blue button-down with a matching pocket square folded perfectly into the breast pocket. I took a moment to admire his folding skills since I’d had more than one battle with groomsmen pocket squares in the past.

“Annabelle! Kate!” He beamed as he ignored the cat fight in front of him and rushed to us for air kisses.

“What’s going on?” I asked after Fern stepped back from our pseudo embraces.

Fern raised an eyebrow and then started twisting the gargantuan amethyst ring on his finger. “Oh, yes.” He darted a glance at the women, who had stopped screaming and were glaring at each other and breathing heavily. “This is Sonia Romanov-Feinstein, the space healer.” He gestured to the woman in the cargo pants and dropped his voice. “She may be descended from the last Russian tsar but we don’t know for sure.”

“Oh, boy,” Kate said.

“And I’m Janet Evans.” The other woman turned from the spiritualist-come-Russian-Tsarina and held out her hand. “The producer for Diamond Weddings.”

“Nice to meet you,” I said, shaking her hand. This explained a lot. “So you’re on board to film the wedding already? I thought you already scoped it out the other day.” I couldn’t help but remember the bride’s first reaction to the film crew coming aboard and had hoped they wouldn’t be making regular appearances before the wedding day.

Janet took a breath and seemed to be picking her words carefully. “We were requested to come on board.”

“As was I,” Sonia said, her fists planted on her hips. “Kristie brought me on for the sole purpose of ridding her wedding venue of negative energy. And all these cameras are throwing the energy out of balance.” She pushed a loose strand of hair off her face. For a space-healer, she was giving off some pretty hostile vibes.

I held up my hands. “Okay, okay.” I turned to Janet. “Who asked you to come back?” I tried to sound sympathetic but firm. “You know the bride has an issue with all this media coverage.”

Janet rolled her eyes. “Believe me, I didn’t drag my guys down to the docks for fun. Mrs. Barbery requested we film her first session with her stylist.”

“Jeremy Johns?” Kate asked. “But he’s been here for days.”

Janet shook her head. “No, her personal hair and makeup stylist. He just flew in from Paris.”

“You’re kidding me,” I said. “She has a hairstylist from Paris?” Why was I surprised? I glanced at Fern to see how he was taking the news that he had competition. “Have you met him?”

Fern bobbed his head up and down. “Damian. He’s divine. He’s been giving me all the scoop Babs and her friends and their jewelry.”

There wasn’t much Fern loved more than enormous jewelry and juicy gossip. Combining them was like throwing gasoline on a flame.

“So if you’re with Damian, where is the bride?” I asked Fern

He gave me a blank look. “I thought she was with Sonia. The last I knew, they were clearing the negative energy from the main foyer when Damain came in with the film crew headed up to Mrs. Barbery’s suite. Damian admired my ring and we started talking about jewels and the time just flew by and the nest thing I knew, I heard screaming.” Fern giggled and blushed. I tried hard not to let out a sigh of exasperation.

“I can’t wait to meet this Damian guy,” Kate whispered to me. “Since when have you seen Fern like this?”

I had to agree. It was unusual to see Fern impressed by anyone but it made me a bit nervous.

“They ruined our ritual so Kristie went to talk to her step-mother,” Sonia said. Her voice had become much calmer now and she seemed to be returning to her spiritualist persona. “I insisted that this woman remove her invasive technology from the ship but she refused.”

Janet shrugged. “I have to get the shots. This is a big wedding.”

“Can you shoot up in Mrs. Barbery’s suite and avoid the rest of the boat while Ms. Feinstein performs her rituals?” I asked.

“That’s Romanov-Feinsten,” the spiritualist corrected me.

I ignored Kate’s snort of laughter as I turned to Sonia. “Does that work for you? You can clear the rest of the boat but just don’t touch Mrs. Barbery’s room.”

Sonia sniffed and gave the smallest nod of her head. “Space healing wouldn’t work in there, anyway. Not with just one healer, anyway.”

I tended to agree with her. It would take a team of space healers to tackle Babs Barbery and more time than we had until the wedding.

“Well, I’d better get back to Damian,” Fern said, bouncing on the balls of his feet. He motioned to Janet. “I’ll take you to the suite.”

As Fern led Janet away and Sonia disappeared inside the boat ringing her finger cymbals as she went, I let out a sigh or relief. “Problems solved.”

“Not exactly.” The woman’s voice from behind made me jump.

Mandy, the ship’s Chief Stew who had been so helpful to us so far, was coming down the stairs from above and a tall, broad man I’d never seen before followed closely behind her. Neither was smiling.

“We need to have a word,” the mystery man said, his expression stony.

“This doesn’t look good,” Kate said.

I gulped. When Kate was right, she was right.

Introducing Mr. and Ms. Parifax! {Creative Name Changing}

One of my coolest couples ever has come up with one of the most creative solutions to the "name change" issue. We've had lots of brides keep their name, plenty hyphenate both names and one create a new last name for both out of their existing last names. But the former Lia Mandaglio and Hudson Taylor have taken it a step further and created a new last name for both of them that is unrelated to their previous names. They are now Lia and Hudson Parifax!

Lia and Hudson are both ardent feminists and advocates for LGBT rights. Hudson is the founder of the gay-rights advocacy group Athlete Ally for athletes, and he speaks at colleges and schools throughout the country asking athletes to sign a pledge to end homophobia. Lia is a lawyer in New York who is equally progressive and fabulously cool.

This couple is so perfect for each other and I loved seeing how crazy for each other they were. I was lucky enough to get to work with them on their wedding because, at the time, DC allowed same-sex marriage while New York did not and it was important to the couple to be married in an inclusive state.

It was just as crucial to them that their name support their feminist beliefs. Hudson explained their reasoning for creating a new last name in this article for "Out Sports" Magazine:

"A lot of contemporary couples keep their own last names, which is great and something we are considering. But, we want to have the same name. We could hyphenate them. But, our surnames are our fathers' surnames, and their fathers' surnames, and their fathers' surnames etc.

Even if we decided to take our mother's maiden names, we'd still be operating in a patrilineal naming system. We find it pretty disturbing that male names have been "labeling" people for hundreds of years. Matrilineal surnames and non-sex-based surnames don't really exist. So, we decided to just pick our own -- fresh, equal, ours. That way, we can share a name that does not perpetuate patrilineage. My parents were upset in the beginning. But, I asked them: "Why is it that no one cares if my sisters abandon their surnames to adopt the names of their husbands, but everyone panics when I want to abandon my surname to adopt a new name with my spouse?" My parents understood, and as always, are very supportive."

Lia explained the meaning behind the name they chose: Parifax:

"We combined the latin words pari and fax. Pari has a clear English translation - it means the same or equivalent (i.e. "with the same" or "of the same" depending on the context). Fax is a little harder to describe. It's literal translation is flame or torch, but it refers to the fire or passion of life. It also refers to celestial bodies like comets as well as to ritual torches used in marriages and funerals. In sum the name Parifax translates to "with the same flame."

After getting to know Lia and Hudson while planning their wedding with them for 2 and 1/2 years, I can absolutely say that this is one couple that does live life with the same flame. Their passion for life, for each other and for creating a better world is powerful and you can't help but catch their enthusiasm when you are around them. I can't wait to see all the amazing things the new Lia and Hudson Parifax will do!

An Elegant Union at Union Station {Premal + Chris}

The fun Hotel Monaco in Chinatown served as the getting ready location for both the bride and groom of this wedding. Makeup artist, Pattie Martin and hairstylist Giselle of Hair by Giselle spent the morning with the bride and her close friends and family getting them all ready for the special day.

Sari wrapper, Yogita Devani, worked with the ladies to make sure their beautiful saris were put on correctly and looking perfect.

The bride and groom chose to see each other before the ceremony. The talented Greg Gibson shot some amazing photos of their first meeting and pictures around the Hotel Monaco. Their families then joined them to take pictures around the hotel and in and around Union Station, the site of their ceremony and reception.

For the Groom’s baraat, the Groom rode in on a white horse (thanks to Harmon’s Carriages) and the crowd was led by both a drummer, Dholi Sorabh and pre-recorded music played by DJ Ross of Chris Laich Entertainment.

Guests were then led through the ornate main hall of Union Station to the ceremony in Columbus Club. Sachi Sood of Partyland created the colorful mandap and aisle décor for the ceremony. Chaitanya Bhagavan Dasa did a great job leading the ceremony. He took the time to explain, in English, what was happening throughout the entire ceremony for those guests who do not speak Hindi.

The ceremony ended and guests entered the Palm Court for cocktails and hors d’eourves. Guests found their escort cards under a stunning peacock statue the florist designed.

During cocktails and dinner, guests were encouraged to stop by the photobooth, provided by Booth-O-Rama, that also served as the couple’s guestbook. Guests could take pictures with fun props, keep a photo strip for themselves or glue a photo strip into the couple’s guestbook.

After the bride and groom’s costume change, it was time for the dinner reception, that took place in the East Hall. Amber lighting lit the room and bright pink, blue and purple linen covered the tables. The couple was led into the reception by Dholi Sorabh. What a great way to start a party!

Dinner was a team effort, Design Cuisine provided the American fare while IndAroma handled all Indian dishes. One of the highlights was the delicious dessert buffet provided by Design Cuisine. The based Alaska’s on a stick are to die for!!

DJ Michael Valenti did a great job of keeping the guests dancing the night away. The bride and groom made donations to the Susan G Komen Foundation in each guest’s name.

The bride and groom ended the night by having their guests hold sparklers outside of Union Station as they walked through it and headed off into the night.

I share with some of my brides the love for cheap confetti cake from a box. Whatever happened to the real confetti frosting??

One of the things Laura and I share is our love of the amazing Spa at the Mandarin Oriental in DC. When I got married, I told my husband if he wanted a happy wife, he should send me there at least once a year.

I love giving and getting party favor bags. It almost doesn't matter what is in them. It's just exciting to take something home.

This next item was introduced to me by a planner friend of mine. Besides being the name of my cousins and one of my best friend's new baby girl, Zoe's Chocolate is out of this world. The Chewy Sea Salt Caramels are amazing.

Just two more loves of mine and great gifts, my feet are always cold, so warm fuzzy socks, especially this time of year is the best gift I can get.

(Those are not my legs)

And finally, I've said for a long time that what I would like fresh flowers in my house every week. The colors just make me smile and feel alive. Dahlia's are my favorite.

A Special Couple

Jeff and Dan got married on a gorgeous Sunday evening in October at the Anderson House in Dupont. The couple, who hosted the nuptials of friends last year at their home, wanted an intimate, dinner at home feel, but needed a slightly larger space to accommodate all of the friends and family who mean so much to them.

As guests arrived, they mingled and noshed with each other and the couple before the ceremony got underway.

Upon being pronounced, the couple took the time to hug and kiss their family members seated in the first row before walking back up the aisle together.

The grand staircase in the ballroom made for the perfect post to thank their guests for the love and support they have received.

Yes, that is a toilet bowl cake. Many of you know how much I love Cake Wrecks. If I'm ever having a rough day, I can just bop on over to the site and I will be in tears laughing within minutes. Something about really bad cakes makes me hysterical. So I thought I'd share a round-up of some hilariously bad groom's cakes from Cake Wrecks.

The toilet bowl cake above really makes you wonder about people. Specifically the groom. Maybe I shouldn't wonder too hard. But speaking about bad ideas, how about a foot cake?

Mike R. reports: "This was the groom's cake at a wedding I photographed. (The groom lost his big toe in a lawnmower accident as a kid.) You can't see it in this photo, but of course the cake is red raspberry."

Um, yum?

This ode to shooting deers and mounting their heads really looks festive with that party hat, huh? I ask you now, who wouldn't want that sitting on a table next to their wedding cake?

But in case you were starting to think that sharing table space with the Groom's cakes is a bad idea, check this out. It's always better to let him have his own cake, my friends. Always.

Fun Groom's Cakes!

As a true Southern girl, I love Groom's cakes. The classic armadillo one from Steel Magnolias isn't exactly my style but I do love a creative cake made just for the groom. We've had some fun ones over the years, from the replica of the Washington Monument for the groom who oversaw the renovation of the monument to the edible Hummer for the car buff. Now there are plenty that are just plain bad and deserve to be on Cake Wrecks (perhaps my favorite website EVER), but that's another post for another day.

Here are some I love (some are ours and some aren't).

The above cake was for one of our grooms and was an exact replica of the cabin he loved visiting as a boy. The cake was designed by Fancy Cakes by Leslie.

Fancy Cakes by Leslie created both the above crab-inspired cake for a Maryland groom and the cooler below for a die-hard Redskins fan.

The cake below is from Charm City Cakes (of Ace of Cakes fame) in Baltimore and is just hilarious. Yes, it is a replica of the bridge from the original Star Trek and yes, I do feel like a dork for loving it.

Scarves for a Good Cause {Cindy's Cancer Fund}

Today's post isn't about wedding details or wedding inspiration. It's about real-life inspiration. One of the wedding vendors we've worked with for years and years, Lisa Sprites of Sprites Ink, is raising funds to help her sister-in-law, Cindy, who has been diagnosed with terminal cancer.

Cindy's mom is knitting beautiful shimmery scarves to raise money to help with her daughter's treatments and all the costs that start piling up when you deal with a terminal illness. She's selling the scarves for $12 each or 2 for $20. This is a steal for such pretty scarves and she is making them in lots of colors (see above).

What do you do if you're invited to a wedding and everything on the registry is either taken, too cheap or way out of your budget? You know how it is. You loose track of time and by the time to hop on over to Crate and Barrel, the only things left are a sofa or a whisk. Some people might say that it's always right to give cash and in many areas of the country, cash is the expected gift. But there are still places or situations where a gift shouldn't fit in an envelope. So, what are some options?

If possible, always buy off the registry. The couple spent hours picking these items for a reason. They want them and they need them. Even if you think buying one place setting is boring, they will appreciate being able to set their table for more than one person at a time. If the registry is bare, see if you can get them a gift card for that store.

No dice? Now is where we get creative. Here are some of the best ideas I've seen as well as a round-up of the worst.

For a couple who met while backpacking through Europe after college, one friend got them a bottle of wine from every country the couple visited. They loved opening each bottle during their first year of marriage and reminiscing about their travels. You could also get a wine-loving couple a year long membership in a wine-of-the-month club.

In the same vein, you could get a couple season tickets to the theater or their favorite sporting team. Even a year's membership to a museum for art buffs or a gift certificate to a favorite restaurant. Or how about cooking classes so they learn how to put all those pots and pans from their registry to use? All are fun ways to give a couple a night (or day) out as newlyweds.

If you have some artistic talent (or just know a good framer), consider having their invitation framed for them. A lot of times, couples forget to actually do anything with all their wedding memorabilia so being able to instantly hang their invitation on the wall is a lovely treat. I heard of a couple loving a personalized embosser they received because they could use it on holiday cards right away. I could use one of those!

Now here are some of the oddest gifts I've seen or heard of. Oh, and if you can help it, DON'T bring gifts to weddings. Have them shipped. Please.

-a full-size extendable ladder (this was brought to a wedding reception--I'm not kidding--try getting that in the trunk of a limo)
-a set of free weights (okay, that's what it felt like--regardless of what it was, it took two people to carry it and we nearly pulled out our backs in the process--CRAZY)
-a gift with a card written to someone other couple (if you re-gift, please remember to replace the card)
-an engraved picture frame with the wrong name on it (see above rule on re-gifting)
-a check that bounced
-pasta in the shape of the couples initials (did I mention it was dried pasta?)

Ceremony Readings {Going Beyond Corinthians}!

As you can imagine, I've heard a lot of ceremony readings over the years. A. lot. But the vast majority have been the same. Tried and true classic readings like Corinthians and Elizabeth Barrett Browning (both of which I adore).

But if these don't suit you or you want to be different, I found some readings that may fit the bill. I've always loved "The Invitation" and love the thought of it in a wedding ceremony. It's edgy. But, then again, so is marriage.

Hands down, I cannot take credit for this first weekly wedding quote.
